Ernest "Ernie" N. Nelson, 78, of Coon Valley

  Ernest “Ernie” N. Nelson, 78, of Coon Valley died Friday, January 22, 2010 at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse. 

He was born January 26, 1931, at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse to Elmer and Nora (Mahlum) Nelson.  He was baptized February 22, 1931 and confirmed on May 27, 1945 by Pastor H.O. Bach, at Coon Valley Lutheran Church.  He was a 1948 graduate of Westby High School.  Ernie served in the United States Army from January 29, 1952 until January 28, 1954, in Korea.  On December 3, 1966, he married Audrey J. Gronvold at Coon Valley Lutheran Church by Pastor R.J. Vevle.

Eva E. Gullord, 91, of LaCrosse

Eva E. Gullord, 91, of La Crosse, died Thursday January 7, 2010 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.  She was born April 4, 1918 to Joseph and Clara (Strangstalien) Johnson in Coon Township, Vernon County.

 
She was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church, rural Westby.  Eva married Clinton Gullord on April 4, 1938 at the Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Parsonage in Westby by Rev. Holum.  The couple farmed the Gullord home farm at rural Coon Valley before moving to La Crosse in 1963.  Eva worked at Montgomery Ward and then at Bethany Riverside both in La Crosse for several years retiring in 1985.  She was a long time member of the Coon Valley Lutheran Church.  Eva enjoyed doll collecting and antiques.

Evelyn H. Spears, 92, of Stoddard

Evelyn H. Spears, 92, of Stoddard, died Thursday January 7, 2010 at her home.  She was born in rural Chaseburg on September 11, 1917 the daughter of Adolph and Emma (Seidel) Lenser. Evelyn graduated from Central High School in 1935.  She married Harold Stromstad and they farmed on Chaseburg ridge.  They were later divorced and in 1948 she married Chester Spears.  They spent most of their married lives gardening and truck farming on County Hwy. B in the town of Medary.  Evelyn also worked at Culp’s Restaurant in La Crosse for 16 years. Chester and Evelyn also raised Red Factor canaries for many years – often having over 300 canaries in their home. They retired to Stoddard in 1981 and enjoyed playing cards with friends.  Chester died November 5, 1993.  In later years Evelyn and Bonnie enjoyed many trips to the casinos and made many friends on the bus trips.

   

 

Survivors include her daughter Bonnie Spears of Stoddard; several cousins and special friends Elaine Wrobel and Doris Sorenson.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chester and her daughter and son-in-law Emily and John Bruun.    

 

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday January 11, 2010 at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley.  Rev. Dean Staffanson will officiate with burial in the Stoddard Cemetery at a later date.  Friends may call at the Seland Funeral Home on Monday from noon until service time.

 

Lillian M. Volden, 87, Westby/Coon Valley

Lillian M. Volden, 87, died Sunday December 13, 2009 at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby where she had been a resident since April. The past 8 years she had lived at the Bothne House in Coon Valley. She was born August 8, 1922 to Willie and Inga (Hage) Bjorge at home in Coon Township, Vernon County.  Lillian was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member at Vang Lutheran Church.  On June 14, 1944 she married Denver Ramsett in Baltimore, Maryland.  She then married Purdy Volden on October 2, 1976. He died January 19, 1999. 


Lillian worked at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse for 10 years before retiring.  She enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers, playing cards, traveling and being with family.

 

 

Survivors include one son Dennis (Barbara) Ramsett of Janesville; one grandson Steven Ramsett of Arlington, TX; 2 great granddaughters Abbigail and Ashley Ramsett; a sister Irene Larson of Coon Valley; a brother Lester Bjorge of Del City, OK and many nieces and nephews. 

 

In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by 4 brothers Joel, Willard, Albert and Glenn and one sister Avis Strom.    

 

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday December 17, 2009 at Vang Lutheran Church, rural Westby with Rev. Julie Wollman officiating. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be given to Vang Lutheran Church. 

 

Sandra "Sandy" K. Mathison, 67, of Coon Valley

Sandra “Sandy” K. Mathison, 67, of Coon Valley and formerly of Chaseburg died Tuesday November 10, 2009 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse from injuries following a fall in her home.  She was born February 16, 1942 to Martin and Alma (Myhre) Ostrem in Chaseburg.  She graduated from Westby High School in 1960.  Sandy married Richard Mathison on June 24, 1967.  Richard died November 18, 2008. She enjoyed going for walks and Wednesday morning breakfast with Karen Jaeger.  Sandy was an active member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chaseburg.

Nora F. Peterson, 93, of La Crosse

Nora F. Peterson, 93, of La Crosse, died Tuesday November 3, 2009 at Lakeview Health Center in West Salem.  She was born October 4, 1916 to Fred and Olga (Hellerud) Peterson in Hamburg Township, Vernon County.  Nora was baptized, confirmed and a life long member of Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church, rural Chaseburg.  She worked for many years as a nursing assistant at Bethany on Cass. 

 

Survivors include several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 7 brothers. 

 

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday November 9, 2009 at Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Rev. Donald Stein will officiate with burial in the church cemetery.  Friends may call at the church on Monday from 3 p.m. until service time. The Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley is assisting the family.  Memorials may be given to the Middle Coon Valley Church Building Fund. 

 

Alice Jergena Schlicht, 86, of Chaseburg

Alice Jergena Schlicht, 86 of rural Chaseburg died Thursday October 22, 2009 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was born July 26, 1923 to John H. and Amanda (Gabrielson) Ostrem in Jefferson Township, Vernon County.  She married Edmund Schlicht on September 28, 1946. The couple farmed their married life on the Schlicht home farm in Harmony Township. Besides farming she enjoyed gardening, especially her flower gardens. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. 

 

Survivors include two sons Raymond (Ann) and Alvin (Sue) both of rural Chaseburg; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 4 sisters Doris Sorenson of Coon Valley, Arlene Severson of Holmen, Francis (Eugene) Bekkedal of Viroqua and Rachel (Emil) Cornell of Barre Mills; 2 sisters-in-law Dorothy Ostrem of Viroqua and Myrna Ostrem of Chaseburg; an aunt Haldes in Norway and many other relatives and friends. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Edmund on December 28, 2002; two brothers Herb and John O. Ostrem and two brothers-in-law Raymond Sorenson and Sylvan Severson.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday October 26, 2009 at the Lower Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Rev. Donald Fox and Rev. Mitzi Miyamoto will officiate with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in La Crosse.  Friends may call on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be given to Gundersen Lutheran Hospice.   

 

 

Albert "Al" Schwartz, 84, Viroqua


Albert “Al” Schwartz, 84, of Viroqua, died Thursday October 22, 2009 at his home. He was born August 20, 1925 in Monroe, Wis. to Albert and Mary (Westgard) Schwartz.  He was U.S. Army World War II veteran.  On April 1, 1949 Albert married Carol DeBoth in Dubuque, Iowa.  The couple lived in Milwaukee and raised a family until 1980 when they moved to their hobby farm in Antigo. In 1989 they moved to Brodhead and since June 1994 Albert has lived in Viroqua.  Carol passed away April 12, 2008. Albert worked for 31 years at Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company.  He was a past commander of the VFW Post in Milwaukee and enjoyed collecting coins, walking and visiting with people and dogs daily.

 

Survivors include four children; daughter Ann Marie (Thomas) Smith of Onalaska, 3 sons David of Sun City, Ariz., Tom (Sue) of Anacortes, Wash., and Alan (Mary) of Central Point, Oregon; 7 grandchildren Kimberly, Jason, Debbie, Rachael, Carol, Nicki and Vito; 10 great grandchildren; one brother Glen (Mary) of Monroe; nieces, nephews and many dear friends in and around the Viroqua area.

 

In addition to his wife Carol, he was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in-law Carol; two sisters Marge and Rachael and his dog Penney.

 

Friends and family are invited for a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday October 26, 2009 at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley with a prayer service at 6:45 p.m. Private burial will be at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park.
