Sandra L. Nelson

August 15, 1941 — February 18, 2024

Sandra Louise Nelson 82, of La Crosse, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday February 18, 2024.  Sandy was born August 15, 1941, in Albert Lea, MN to Selmer and Mabel (Ferley) Johnson.  They moved to La Crosse when she was 4 years old.  Sandy was confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in La Crosse, graduated from Central High School. After graduation she worked in the laboratory as a histology technician at St. Francis Hospital.

Sandy married Michael Dean Nelson on November 9, 1963 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church.  They made their home in Coon Valley and raised 3 children, Luann Jean, Brian Dean and Jana Lee. In 1983 they moved to La Crosse, then in 1986 to Glendale, AZ where they lived for 12 years, returning to La Crosse in 1998.

Sandy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She loved to read, play cards and was in 3 card clubs while living in Coon Valley, she also enjoyed playing volleyball with her friends at the elementary school in Coon Valley.

Sandy belonged to Coon Valley Lutheran Church and was a member of the Naomi circle until their move to La Crosse where they joined Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

Sandy is survived by her husband Mike; daughters, Luann (Glen) Hoff and Jana Schalow (Mike Wedwick); grandchildren, Benjamin (Betty) Hoff of Lancaster, their children, Ella, Ava, Becca and a baby boy due in May, Kyle (Carly) Hoff of West St Paul, MN, twins due in July, Austen (Peyton) Schalow of La Crosse, their children Sativa and River and Samantha Schalow of Holmen;  a brother, Phillip Johnson of La Crosse; niece Kerri (Roger) Piazza; nephew Kevin (Geri) Johnson, their children and grandchildren; a sister-in-law Betty Nelson;  a very special cousin Kathy (Leland) Sage;  and numerous extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Brian in 1991 and sister-in-law Anita Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday February 24, 2024 at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Rev. Jim Scaife will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time. Sandy will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Memorials can be given to the Coon Valley Lutheran Church.
