Joseph "Joe" A. Berra Sr

Joseph "Joe" A. Berra Sr. 94, of Chaseburg, died Tuesday June 28, 2016 at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse. He was born October 2, 1921 in Genoa Township, Vernon County to Anthony and Margaret (Barilani) Berra. Joe was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1944 -1946. He married Alice Schlicht in 1946 and they later divorced. Joe worked for Bakalars Sausage Co. for 33 years and also farmed in rural Chaseburg for many years. He enjoyed pinochle and bingo, traveling to casinos and fishing. He was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, Friends of Chaseburg, the Chaseburg American Legion Post #202 and a charter member of the Coon Creek VFW Post #10532.

Survivors include 4 children, Herbert (Lynn) Berra, Robert (Rachel) Berra both of Chaseburg, Marilyn (Richard) Skrede of Stoddard and Joe Jr. (Ann) Berra of Chaseburg; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a brother, Alfred (Marie) Berra of La Crosse; a sister-in-law Pauline Berra of Genoa and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Richard, Philip, James and Raymond; 2 sisters, Mildred Bakalars and Alma Pedretti and a son-in-law Allen Garvens.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday July 2, 2016 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Genoa. Rev. William Dhein will officiate. Burial with military honors by the Chaseburg American Legion Post #202 and Coon Creek VFW #10532 will be in the St. Charles Church Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time. The family would like to thank all the staff and especially Sharon, Vickie and Belinda of Bethany St. Joseph Care Center for their excellent and compassionate care given to Joe.
