Michael "Mike" W. Johnson, 61, of Coon Valley passed away having lost his struggle with lung cancer on Sunday June 6, 2010 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Mike's faith in the saving grace of Jesus gave him assurance of his heavenly home. He was born August 2, 1948 to Orville and Beatrice (Stafslien) Johnson in LaCrosse. He was baptized and confirmed at Middle Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Mike graduated from Westby High School in 1966. Mike was in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1970 serving 2 tours in Vietnam. On November 11, 1972, he married Donna Brose at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Westby. Mike worked as a machinist at Trane Company in La Crosse for 35 years. He also enjoyed his work as custodian at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church in recent years. Mike was a former board member for the Village of Coon Valley where he served several terms as Village President. He was a member of the Chaseburg American Legion Post # 202, the Coon Creek VFW and the Coon Valley Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and working in his garage.
Survivors include his wife Donna; two sons Troy (Shannon) and their children Cole and Connor and Nick (fiancAC. Chandra Neary) and his children Garret, Hallie and Tate; his mother Beatrice Johnson of Chaseburg; brothers and sisters, Eugene (Bernadette) of Chaseburg, Joan (Marvin) Heller of Cashton, Bonnie (Dean) Peterson of Westby and Rick (Ethel) of Chaseburg; brothers and sisters-in-law Richard (Judy) Brose of Coon Valley, Peter (Pam) Brose of La Crosse, Alton (Gloria) Brose of Viroqua, Chip (Jamie) Sueker of Buffalo, Minn., and Dorothy (Don) Kjelland of Coon Valley; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father Orville; a niece Katelyn Johnson; nephew Andrew Peterson and a sister-in-law Arlene Sueker.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday June 11, 2010 at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church. Rev. Mitzi Miyamoto will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Chaseburg American Legion Post #202 and the Coon Creek VFW. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time.
