Roger Strangstalien, 90, passed away on August 25, 2024, at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby, surrounded by family and friends, who gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday.
Roger was born on August 25, 1934, to Art and Mabel Strangstalien. He was active in farm programs during high school and graduated from Westby High School in 1952. Following graduation, Roger proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, spending two years as a cryptographer while stationed in Germany. During his service, he received a Good Conduct Medal and a Marksmanship Medal.
On May 4, 1963, Roger married Donna Shisler at the Viroqua Methodist Church. Together, they built a loving family and raised two children, Thomas and Leah.
A dedicated dairy farmer, Roger devoted many years milking cows and working the land on his home farm. A man of strong faith, he served on multiple boards at Vang Lutheran Church. After retiring from farming, Roger worked in maintenance for Walmart. He was an avid Milwaukee Brewers fan and a skilled woodworker, a hobby he treasured before losing the use of his legs. His family cherishes the beautiful woodcrafts he created and the countless hours he spent passing on his woodworking skills to his grandchildren.
Roger leaves behind his devoted wife Donna, his son Tom Strangstalien, his daughter Leah (Ryan) Call, his grandchildren Avery Strangstalien, Shaw Strangstalien, George Call, Joe (Julia) Call, Jack Call, and Julianne Call; two brothers, Dennis (Suzanne) Strangstalien and Larry (Rachel) Strangstalien, sister Gloria Storey, sister-in-law Marie Strangstalien, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers Gordon, Verlyn, and Robert Strangstalien, and his sisters Beverly Jensen, Dorothy Sievertson, Lucille Ostrem, and Arlene Townsend.
Roger will be remembered as a hard-working, kind, patient, and honest man who was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday September 3, 2024, at the Vang Lutheran Church, in rural Westby. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until service time. Rev. Alyssa Weaver will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. The Seland Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family. Condolences may be given at selandsfuneralhome.com.
