Sidney A. Larson, 92, of La Crosse and formerly of Chaseburg went to his heavenly home Sunday March 11, 2012 at the Bethany Riverside Nursing Home on La Crosse. He was born July 19, 1919 in Coon Valley on a farm to Albert and Anna (Mittelbach) Larson. He was raised on a dairy farm with his parents, brother and sisters. He was baptized and confirmed at the Upper Coon Valley Lutheran Church. He had his first farm before 1942. Sidney served in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 1942 to November 1945. He served as a medic in England, France and the European Theatre where he earned 3 Bronze Stars. Upon his return from war, Sidney married Ethel Denson on July 18, 1947. They owned and operated several dairy farms in the Coon Valley and Chaseburg areas until their retirement. Sidney logged his private woodlands well into his 80's. The couple loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Alaska, Nevada, Washington, Arizona and California. Ethel passed away May 29, 2003 after celebrating 55 years of marriage.
He was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chaseburg where he mowed the lawn and cemetery and other cemeteries in the area. Sidney was a lifetime member of the Chaseburg American Legion Post #202 and Coon Creek VFW Post #10532.
Survivors include his 13 children Nancy (Marlin) Wohlert of La Crescent, MN; Quinten (Karen) Larson of Stoddard, Robert (Barbara) Larson of Janesville, Merlin (Michelle) Larson of Stoddard, Sharon Johnson of Le Moore, CA, Denise (Orlan) Bakkum of Coon Valley, Patricia (Ralph) Nestor of Cashton, Daniel (Sharon) Larson of Hortonville, Susanne Larson of Mesquite, NV, Timothy (Valerie) Larson of Spirit Lake, ID, Wayne (Marie) Larson of Appleton, Curtis Larson of Fairbanks, Alaska and Owen (Jodi) Larson of Wasilla, Alaska; as well as 37 grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 9 step great grandchildren; a sister Arlean Stefferud; a sister-in-law Marilyn Denson and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife Ethel, he was preceded in death by and infant son, John; his parents; 2 sisters Helen Hanson and Ann Adel Johnson; a brother Harold and as infant brother Delbert.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday March 15, 2012 at the Bethany Riverside Faith and Life Chapel, 2575 S. 7th Street in La Crosse. Rev. Kimberly Jordan will officiate. Burial with military honors by the Chaseburg American Legion Post #202 and Coon Creek VFW Post #10532 will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in La Crosse. Friends and family are invited for a visitation at the Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday March 14. Memorials may be given to the Chaseburg Legion Post #202, Coon Creek VFW #10532 or Bethany Lutheran Homes Chapel. Online condolences may be offered at selandsfuneralhome.com.
