Lucile A. Kumm, 98, of Coon Valley

Lucile Anna Kumm, 98, of Coon Valley, passed away at Gundersen Heath System on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. She was born to Anna (Sedevie) and Joseph Silha on April 6, 1918 in Bowman, North Dakota, the third of six children. She married Lloyd Kumm on May 20, 1952 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Coon Valley. They lived in La Crosse until 1961, when they purchased a farm near Stoddard. Lucile worked for many years at Rocky’s Supper Club. She was active in the Coon Valley American Legion Auxiliary, Sr. Mary’s Altar Society, and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church until the time of her death. Lucile enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, cooking, and baking. She loved and was dearly loved by her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children Marilyn (Marv) Nordquist of Hayward, Wisconsin, Brian (Karen) Kumm of Algona, Iowa, Catherine Saari of Farmington, Minnesota, and Neil Kumm of Coon Valley, Wisconsin. Nine Grandchildren: Anna Taylor of Madison, Wisconsin, Steve (Renee) Nordquist of Hayward, Wisconsin, Matthew Nordquist (Justine Harris) of Madison, Wisconsin, Ryya and Logan Kumm of Winter Garden, Florida, Ian Saari (Fiancée Christine Avery) Farmington, Minnesota, Elsa Marden (Tyler) of Laurel, Maryland, Brianna and Travis Kumm of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Three great grandchildren: Sierra and Nikolas Nordquist, Hayward, Wisconsin, and Evan Nordquist, Madison, Wisconsin. Two step grandchildren: Aaron Rosenblum of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Eli Rosenblum of Madison, Wisconsin. Special niece Jan Larson of La Crosse, Wisconsin, one sister-in-law Corky Silha of Glendive, Montana, and many nieces and nephews.



Leo J. Lusk, 84, of Coon Valley

Lusk, 84, of Coon Valley passed away Monday, December 26, 2016 after a long battle with emphysema.  He was born on May 26, 1932 to Albert & Anna (Breidel) Lusk.  He grew up on a farm that he loved near Coon Valley.  He enlisted in the Navy in 1955 and served his term on the Aircraft Carrier USS Saratoga.  After his service he met the love of his life, Geraldine Goyette and they got married June 21, 1958.  They bought the farm next to his parent’s in 1959 and farmed until retiring.  He then worked at Coulee Refrigeration for several years.   In 2014 they moved to Onalaska.  They were blessed with 6 wonderful children.  Brian (Colleen), Vickie Meyer, Michael (Becky), LeeAnn Lein, Gregory (Ellen) and Jackie Lusk, twelve grandchildren, Joshua, Carlie, Alexander, Melissa, Matthew, Jessica, Nicholas, Jacob, Theresa, Maria, Emma and Adam and 3 great-grandchildren, Chase, Calvin and Ezra.  He is also survived by two brothers James (Mary) and Gerald.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Joanne.  Leo loved to farm, specifically plowing and splitting wood.  After retirement he finally found the time to enjoy a new past-time – fishing.



Katherine M. Johnson, 92, LaCrosse/Chaseburg

Katherine M. Johnson, 92, of La Crosse and formerly of Chaseburg, died Thursday December 22, 2016 in her home at Eagle Crest South. She was born December 15, 1924 in the Town of Jefferson, Vernon County to Oliver and Esther (Gronning) Nerison.  Katherine was baptized at Bethel Lutheran Church, rural Viroqua and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church, rural Westby.  She attended Nerison School and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1942.  Katherine attended Coleman Technical School in La Crosse. She worked at Western Fruit Co. and then Trane Co. in La Crosse.  Katherine married Donald Johnson on October 11, 1947 at Vang Lutheran Church.  The couple farmed near Westby until 1955 when they moved to a farm near Chaseburg.  They moved to La Crosse in 1990. Donald died July 10, 2002. Katherine was an active member of the Lower Coon Valley Lutheran Church, Sarah Circle and WELCA where she served as president. In earlier years she was a leader with Homemakers and 4-H. Katherine’s faith was her foundation and her family was most important. She loved spending time with all of them.



Paul L. Martin, 91, of Onalaska

Paul L. Martin, 91, of Onalaska died Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Gundersen Health System, La Crosse.

Paul was born in Crawford County, WI on June 26, 1925 to Orland and Eva (Knaus) Martin.  On December 4, 1946, he married Doris Nelson at Five Points Lutheran Church, Blue River, WI. , and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with their family.   Paul spent many years as a cheesemaker in various rural cheese plants.  He and his family relocated to Newburg’s Corners in 1964 where they were well known for their prize winning cheddar cheese and cheese curds.



Audrey J. Nelson, 76, of Coon Valley

Audrey Joanne Nelson, age 76, of Coon Valley, died Tuesday, Nov 1, 2016, at Brookdale Senior Living in La Crosse.

She was born October 2, 1940, at La Crosse Hospital in La Crosse, WI to Arthur Olaf Gronvold and Tilla Josephine (Strangstadlien) Gronvold.  She was baptized on October 27, 1940 by Pastor Harold Bach and was confirmed on May 22, 1955 by Pastor Harold T. Masted, both at Upper Coon Valley Lutheran Church.  She graduated from Erickson Grade School on May 14, 1954, and she graduated from Westby High School on May 30, 1958.  She attended Vocational School in La Crosse (secretarial course) from September 1958 until March 1959.  On Dec. 3, 1966, she married Ernest N. Nelson at Coon Valley Lutheran Church by Pastor R. J. Vevle.

Audrey worked at Trane Company in La Crosse from March 1959 until May 1968. At that time, she chose to leave Trane Company so that she could stay at home and raise her family.  When her children were older, she worked a few years at Viroqua Leaf Tobacco Co from 1982 through 1984.  Once her oldest child obtained his driver’s license, she began her career at Coon Valley Kwik Trip from September 1984 to December 2005, when she retired.



Anna Marie Sisbach, 82, of rural Westby

Anna Marie Sisbach, 82, of rural Westby, died Sunday October 2, 2016 at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse.  She was born October 23, 1933 in the town of Coon, Vernon County to Kelly and Lenora (Gilbertson) Lee. She was baptized and confirmed at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church.  Anna Marie attended Spring Coulee School and graduated from Westby High School in 1951. She then worked at the Westby Coon Valley State Bank for a of couple years.  Anna Marie married John L. Sisbach, Jr. on March 9, 1957 at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church.  The couple lived in Beloit for 10 years before moving to the town of Coon where they farmed until retiring in 1999.

Clayton “Jim” E.J. Stylen, 82, of La Crosse and formerly of Coon Valley died Wednesday September 28, 2016 at the Bethel Home in Viroqua. 



Glen A. "Junior" Warner, 84, rural Viroqua

flagGlen A. “Junior” Warner, 84, of rural Viroqua, died Wednesday August 31, 2016 at his home.  He was born November 29, 1931 in La Crosse to Glen and Anita (Schaldach) Warner.  He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1950. Glen served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1952. He married Joyce Hertzfeldt in 1963 and they were later divorced. Glen lived in Kenosha and worked at American Motors for 30 years. He retired in 1988 and moved back to Newton, rural Viroqua.

Glen was an excellent baseball player and played for various teams throughout the years both locally and in Kenosha. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, polka music and dancing and helping his neighbors. He also was caretaker of the Huxley, Krause and Newton cemeteries for many years. He was a member of the Chaseburg American Legion Post #202.



Marie G. Green, 96, of Westby

Marie Glenadine (Saxe) Green, 96, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, August 8, 2016. She had been a resident at Norseland Nursing Home for almost three years.  Marie was born January 20, 1920 in rural Wayne County, IL.  She was the fifth child of eight born to Glenn & Edith (Potter) Saxe.  Marie graduated in 1938 from Edwards County High School in Albion, IL. She then went on to earn her teaching degree from Warbler Eastern IL State Teachers College in Charleston, IL.  She taught a few years, in one room school houses where, at times, she would have up to 35 students in multiple grades.  In 1947, she married Henry Wilson Green. They lived on a small farm near Plainfield, IL., where their 7 children were born. Later in 1967, they moved to a dairy farm between Westby and Cashton. Marie dedicated her life to God, family & home.  Her Bible was forever open as a visible sign of the importance of God in everything she did; cooking, cleaning, canning, sewing  in total service to her family.  Later in life, she worked at the Westby Area School District in the library and kitchen. She also organized and maintained a library at Cornerstone Christian Academy, along with selling Christian books.  She enjoyed reading, writing poetry, singing and sharing her love for Christ.



John L. Sisbach, Jr., 82, of rural Westby

flagJohn L. Sisbach, Jr., 82, of rural Westby, died Tuesday July 19, 2016 at Benedictine Manor in La Crosse. He was born October 15, 1933 in Newton Valley, Vernon County to John and Elsie (Mason) Sisbach Sr. John was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Chaseburg.  He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1952.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-55.  John married Anna Marie Lee on March 9, 1957 at the Coon Valley Lutheran Church.  He worked at Adams Korn Kurls Company in Beloit for 10 years in various positions including semi-driving which he enjoyed. John then farmed in the town of Coon until retiring in 1999.

He served as Chairman on the town of Coon Board, the Coon Valley Lutheran Church Council where he served as president, a member of the Coon Valley Creamery Board and the Coon Valley American Legion.  John enjoyed going for drives and picking up fresh Amish cheese curds for friends and family, old time polka music, watching the Packers and Brewers and visiting with his neighbor Dean.
